The idea behind Click-a-Cliché

Fifteen years after the breakup of the Soviet Union the people from East and West have moved closer to each other, having at the same time started to form a picture of who their neighbors are, and what it means to be a part of an increasingly condensed geopolitical space. East and West by all means possess a distinctive awareness of each other. However, this approximation is not at all of an innocent nature, as we can see by the extensive use of stereotypes, which get reproduced in great numbers via all electronic media. Images, which at first instance make an intermediation at all possible, always run the risk of adopting an iconic function. How to possibly avoid this medial conditionality, how to deconstruct it? How can we create contexts, which counter ideological predeterminations?

The exhibition with the title “Click-a-Cliché” aims at presenting young artists from East and West, who energetically confront the problem of representation, the phantoms and the configurations of power, which influence them. By assembling young artistic positions from Eastern Europe, the exhibition aims not only at presenting their strategies, but also at contributing to the perpetual revision and creation of images of our common European cultural sphere. Only from an understanding of differences and by acknowledging the diversity of images, can a vivid Europe emerge.

Through a call for entries at eastern European Art Institutes we selectively collect artwork from young artists, which will be shown in the exhibition “Click-a-Cliché” at the Gallery Reiner Tisch from 14th till 30th of October. The focus lies on the artistic approach in connection with a far-reaching cultural space and its (imaginative) intercultural boarders, which express themselves most notably through the dichotomy East/West. Accompanying the exhibition an international workshop will take place on the 15th and 16th of October, which will approach the topic by means of concrete examples in cooperation with the magazine PLOTKI. The workshop aims at offering a platform for a productive exchange of experiences between young journalists, cultural- and social scientists, photographers and artists and to create new networks for intercultural work.
