GDR Plattenbauten as a Utopian System

East German “Plattenbauten”, pre-fab concrete slab buildings, can be regarded as an architectural utopia. They incorporated the strategy of forming a Socialist society by restricting the individual space and forcing people into collective life because equalized architecture was supposed to produce an equal society.

The outcome is slightly different: Each flat can be considered as a sort of container, filled out by individuals living in it. The architectural intention of equality creats blocks of individual expression as well.
