The Honeymoon Stage PDF Print
06 Jun 2009 By Masako Oshima, Berlin/Kyoto

The ‘Honeymoon Stage’ is the initial phase of the Culture Shock phenomenon as defined by anthropologist Kalervo Oberg who was the first to introduce the term in the 1950s. This stage has colourful scenery, as during this period the differences between the own and unfamiliar culture tend to be seen in a romantic light, wonderful and new. Compared to various colours and shapes that can be found in Buddhist and Hindu ritualistic Mandalas, the complex patterns of changing social intercourse and cultural aesthetics instantly trigger a perceptual hypersensitivity.
